How to Get from Victoria Falls to the Okavango Delta (2026 Transfer Guide)

A short drive to Kasane, a border crossing and a scenic light-aircraft flight. Here is exactly how the connection works, and how we make it effortless.

Quick answer: The easiest way to get from Victoria Falls to the Okavango Delta is a private road transfer of around 80 km to Kasane in Botswana (about 1 to 1.5 hours including the Kazungula border), followed by a scheduled light-aircraft flight into your Delta camp. On the Wilderness Air circuit, guests coming by road need to be at Kasane Airport by 13:00 for the 14:00–14:30 departure into the camps. There are no scheduled airline flights from Victoria Falls straight into the Delta.

Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta are two of Southern Africa's great natural wonders, and they sit surprisingly close together. On a map, the Falls are in the far west of Zimbabwe and the Delta is in northern Botswana. In practice, they are linked by a short drive to the Chobe River town of Kasane and a scenic light-aircraft flight over the Linyanti and the Delta's channels.

We plan this connection for guests every week. This guide explains every step: the routes, the border, the exact flight times on the Wilderness Air circuit, the 20 kg luggage rule, which way round to travel, and how we make the day easy for older travellers. When you are ready to see ready-made routes, our Victoria Falls & Okavango Delta safaris page shows three journeys with 2026 camp prices.

The Three Ways to Travel Between the Falls and the Delta

There are three realistic options. For almost everyone, the first is the right one.

RouteHow it worksDoor to doorBest for
1. Road to Kasane + light aircraftPrivate transfer from your Falls lodge to Kasane Airport, then a scheduled seat-in-plane flight into the DeltaMost of a dayAlmost every traveller: simple, scenic and good value
2. Road to Kasane + 1–3 nights in Chobe + light aircraftAs above, but you stay on the Chobe riverfront first and fly into the Delta from Kasane a few days laterSplit over several daysGuests who want Chobe's elephants and river safaris too
3. Private charterA private light aircraft from Kasane (or from Victoria Falls or Livingstone, subject to permits) direct to your camp's airstripShortestFamilies, groups, photographers with extra gear, or anyone wanting their own timing
Why not fly via Johannesburg? You can fly Victoria Falls to Johannesburg and then Johannesburg to Maun, but it costs a full day and two airline flights. The road to Kasane is shorter, cheaper and far more scenic.

Your Transfer Day, Step by Step

This is how a typical day runs on Route 1, using the Wilderness Air schedule for 2026. Times are a guide; we confirm every pickup for your exact dates.

TimeWhat happens
MorningRelaxed breakfast at your Victoria Falls lodge. Your private driver collects you and your luggage, usually mid-morning.
Around an hour laterYou reach the Kazungula border. Your driver helps you through Zimbabwe exit and Botswana entry formalities.
Before 13:00Arrive at Kasane Airport. Light aircraft check-in and a weigh-in for you and your bags.
14:00 – 14:30Your light aircraft departs Kasane into the camps. Flights are timed to meet international arrivals.
Late afternoonLand on your camp's own airstrip, where your guide is waiting with the vehicle. You are usually in camp in time to settle in before evening.

If you are staying in Chobe first (Route 2), the same 14:00–14:30 Kasane departure applies on the day you fly to the Delta, and your Chobe lodge simply drops you at the airport.

Crossing the Border at Kazungula

The road from Victoria Falls runs west to Kazungula, where Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia meet near the Zambezi and Chobe rivers. From Victoria Falls town you cross from Zimbabwe into Botswana at the Kazungula road border. If you start in Livingstone on the Zambian side, you cross into Botswana over the Kazungula Bridge.

The crossing itself is usually straightforward:

Visas

Botswana is visa-free for most US, UK and EU passport holders for tourist stays. For Zimbabwe and Zambia, many visitors use the KAZA UNIVISA when it is available, which covers both countries and day trips into Botswana. Rules change and depend on your passport, so we confirm the requirements for every guest when we plan. Our Victoria Falls visa and KAZA UNIVISA guide explains the options in detail.

Check your passport. Make sure it is valid for at least six months after you travel and has at least two to three blank pages. Southern African border posts can refuse entry if pages run out.

Flying Into the Delta on the Wilderness Air Circuit

Most Delta camps have no road access, so light aircraft are the normal way in and out. Wilderness Air runs a scheduled seat-in-plane service for its camps across northern Botswana, linking three areas:

AreaCoversWilderness camps
Area 1 – MaunThe town gateway to the OkavangoArrivals and departures for international connections
Area 2 – Okavango DeltaThe Delta, including Moremi and its surrounding concessionsChitabe, Chitabe Lediba, Little Vumbura, Vumbura Plains, Mombo, Little Mombo, Qorokwe, Mokete and more
Area 3 – Linyanti & SavuteThe wild northeast, between the Delta and ChobeDumaTau, Little DumaTau, King's Pool, Linyanti Tented Camp, Savuti

Kasane sits outside these areas in the northeast, with its own daily departure into the camps. Key 2026 times on the circuit:

Flights are short, low and spectacular. From a few hundred metres up you see elephant herds crossing floodplains, the shapes of islands and palm-fringed channels, and often your camp before you land. Many guests tell us the flights are among their favourite moments of the whole trip.

Luggage Rules for Light Aircraft

Light aircraft have strict weight and space limits, because every kilogram affects how the plane flies on short bush airstrips. Plan for:

Most Delta camps include a laundry service, so you need far fewer clothes than you think. Our safari outfit essentials guide has a full packing list that fits the 20 kg limit.

Falls First or Delta First?

Both work. The best order depends on your flights home and the pace you want.

Victoria Falls firstOkavango Delta first
FlowBusy, exciting start; finish in the silence of the bushStart with wilderness; finish with restaurants, activities and a hotel
ArrivingFly into Victoria Falls Airport, usually via JohannesburgFly into Maun or Kasane, usually via Johannesburg
LeavingFly out of Maun at the endFly out of Victoria Falls Airport at the end
Best forMost first-time visitors and honeymoonersGuests whose international flights work better via Victoria Falls

We usually recommend the Falls first. You arrive, rest and enjoy an easy introduction to Africa, then the Delta becomes the long, quiet climax of your journey.

Getting Home From the Delta

On your last morning you enjoy a final activity, then a light aircraft flies you to Maun, the gateway town of the Okavango. Maun has scheduled flights to Johannesburg for international connections. Some itineraries instead fly back to Kasane, then by road to Victoria Falls for an onward flight.

Leave a buffer. Bush flights can be affected by weather, wildlife on the airstrip or the order of pick-ups. We never book a tight same-day connection onto an international flight. If your long-haul flight leaves early in the day, we will plan a night in Johannesburg.

Is the Transfer Easy for Older Travellers?

Yes. This is one of the most comfortable safari connections in Africa, and many of our Falls and Delta guests are in their sixties and seventies. A few things make it easy:

Tell us about any mobility needs when you enquire, and we will choose camps, rooms and transfers to suit.

What Does the Transfer Cost?

Road transfers and light-aircraft seats are priced separately from your lodge and camp nights, and depend on your route, the number of travellers and the time of year. Seat-in-plane flights on the scheduled circuit are the best value. Private charters cost more but carry only your party. Your Tourgy Tourz proposal shows every transfer and flight clearly, so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Victoria Falls from the Okavango Delta?

Victoria Falls is about 80 km by road from Kasane in Botswana. From Kasane, a light-aircraft flight takes you into the Okavango Delta. Most travellers make the whole connection in one day: a road transfer of about 1 to 1.5 hours including the border, then a scheduled flight in the early afternoon.

Can you fly directly from Victoria Falls to the Okavango Delta?

There are no scheduled airline flights from Victoria Falls straight into the Okavango Delta. The usual route is a road transfer to Kasane Airport and a seat-in-plane light-aircraft flight into the camps. A private charter can sometimes be arranged, subject to permits and cost.

What time does the light aircraft leave Kasane for the Delta camps?

On the 2026 Wilderness Air circuit, the departure from Kasane into the camps is at 14:00 to 14:30. Guests coming by road from Victoria Falls or Livingstone need to be at Kasane Airport by 13:00. The camp confirms exact flight times the night before.

What is the luggage limit for Okavango Delta flights?

Plan for about 20 kg per person in total, including hand luggage and camera equipment, packed in a soft-sided bag with no wheels or frame. Extra luggage can usually be stored while you are on safari.

Do I need a visa for Botswana?

Most US, UK and EU passport holders do not need a visa for a tourist visit to Botswana. Requirements depend on your nationality and can change, so Tourgy Tourz confirms the rules for every traveller when planning the itinerary.

Should I visit Victoria Falls or the Okavango Delta first?

Both work. Most first-time visitors and honeymooners prefer Victoria Falls first, ending the journey in the quiet of the Delta and flying home from Maun. If your international flights work better via Victoria Falls, start in the Delta instead.

Is the Victoria Falls to Okavango Delta transfer suitable for older travellers?

Yes. Private road transfers, a driver who handles the border and short scheduled flights make it one of the most comfortable safari connections in Africa. Pilots help every passenger board, and a rest night in Chobe or a private charter can be added.
