Northern Botswana's three great safari regions sit side by side, linked by light aircraft and by water. They share a lot of the same wildlife, yet each has its own character, and the right mix can transform a safari. This guide compares them side by side so you can decide where to spend your nights.

The Three Areas at a Glance
- Okavango Delta: a vast inland delta of channels, lagoons and islands. Includes Moremi Game Reserve and private reserves such as Vumbura, Chitabe and Qorokwe. See our luxury Okavango Delta safaris.
- Linyanti: a private reserve on the Linyanti River and marsh, bordering Namibia. Read our Linyanti guide or see Linyanti safaris.
- Savuti: the Savuti Channel and grasslands that run from the Linyanti to the Savute Marsh. Read our Savuti Channel guide or see Savuti safaris.

Choose the Okavango Delta If…
You want the image most people have of Botswana: gliding through reeds in a mokoro, elephants wading across floodplains, and islands full of wildlife. The Delta also has the widest variety of experiences, from water activities to walking and big-cat viewing in Moremi.
- Best for: first-time visitors, honeymooners, photographers and anyone who wants water activities.
- Top camps: Mombo and Little Mombo on Chief's Island, Vumbura Plains, Little Vumbura, Chitabe and Qorokwe.

Choose the Linyanti If…
You dream of watching hundreds of elephants come down to drink, or of following a pack of wild dogs. The Linyanti's private status means night drives, walks and off-road tracking, with very few other vehicles.
- Best for: elephant lovers, photographers (hides), repeat visitors and travellers looking for value in the green season.
- Top camps: DumaTau, Little DumaTau, King's Pool and Linyanti Tented Camp.
Choose Savuti If…
You want classic open-plains game viewing and big-cat drama, plus a fascinating natural story in the vanishing channel. Savuti is drier and more open than the Delta, so it makes a striking contrast.
- Best for: lion enthusiasts, travellers who have seen the Delta before, and anyone combining with the Linyanti.
- Top camps: Savuti (on the channel) and DumaTau nearby, with Mokete in the Mababe area.

Getting Between Them
All three areas are connected by Wilderness Air light aircraft. Inter-camp flights usually run between about 11:00 and 16:00, and exact times are confirmed the night before. Start from Maun (departures around 14:45 for international arrivals) or Kasane (around 14:00–14:30, after a road transfer from Victoria Falls). If you're starting at the Falls, the Linyanti and Savuti are the natural first stops. See our transfer guide and Victoria Falls & Okavango journeys.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Linyanti better than the Okavango Delta?
Neither is better; they are different. The Delta offers water activities like mokoro and the widest variety of habitats. The Linyanti is better for large dry-season elephant herds, wild dogs and hides. Many travellers combine both.
Can I visit the Linyanti and Savuti on the same trip?
Yes. They are neighbours, and the Savuti Channel starts in the Linyanti. A common plan is three nights in each, connected by a short light-aircraft flight.
Which area is best for a first safari in Botswana?
For a first safari, we usually suggest the Okavango Delta combined with either the Linyanti or Savuti. This gives you water and dry-land contrast in one trip.
Which area is cheapest?
Using 2026 Wilderness rates, Linyanti Tented Camp is the most affordable starting point, from US$604 per person per night sharing in January to March. Mombo in Moremi is the most expensive, from US$2,889 in the green season.
How many nights should I spend in each area?
Three nights per area is ideal. It gives you time for several drives and activities and reduces time spent on transfers.
Is Savuti part of the Okavango Delta?
No. Savuti lies northeast of the Delta, between the Linyanti and the Mababe Depression. The lower part is in Chobe National Park, and the upper channel runs through the private Linyanti Wildlife Reserve.
