Hwange Self-Drive Guide: Routes, Rest Camps & Waterholes

Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park, and one of the best in Southern Africa to explore by car. With rest camps, viewing platforms, picnic sites and waterholes busy with elephants, a Hwange self-drive lets you set your own pace. Here's how to plan the route, where to stay and what to know before you go.

At a glance

  • From Victoria Falls: about 2.5 hours by road to Main Camp
  • Rest camps: Main Camp, Sinamatella and Robins, run by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife (ZimParks)
  • Vehicle: a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and essential in sandy areas and the rains
  • Best time: the dry season, roughly June to October
  • Ideal stay: 3 to 5 nights across two areas

Getting to Hwange by road

From Victoria Falls, follow the main road towards Bulawayo, past the town of Hwange, and turn off towards Main Camp near Dete. The drive takes about 2.5 hours on tar. For the northern areas, Sinamatella is reached via a turn-off near Hwange town, and Robins via a gravel road from the Victoria Falls side. Read our Victoria Falls and Hwange Safari for how to combine the two.

Where to stay: Hwange's rest camps

South-east • the busiest area

Main Camp

The park's headquarters, with chalets, cottages and camping, and the easiest access. Nearby waterholes and the Nyamandhlovu Pan viewing platform make it a great base for first-time visitors.

North • dramatic views

Sinamatella Camp

Perched on a ridge with sweeping views over the Lukosi River valley. The surrounding dams, such as Masuma and Mandavu, are excellent for elephants, hippos, buffalo and lions.

North-west • wild and remote

Robins Camp

A quieter, more remote camp in the north-west, popular with experienced self-drivers who want to get away from it all.

Prefer more comfort? Combine a self-drive with a few nights in a private concession camp. Self-drive vehicles can't enter private concessions, but camps can collect you. See our Where to Stay in Hwange.

Best time for a Hwange self-drive

The dry season, from about June to October, is best: roads are easier and animals gather at the waterholes. The rainy season, from about November to March, is beautiful but some roads become difficult. See the Best Time to Visit Hwange.

Self-drive or guided?

Self-driving offers freedom and value. A guided safari offers expert tracking, walking, night drives and private concessions. Many travellers do both: a few days of self-drive followed by a guided stay. Read our Hwange National Park Safari Guide and Is Zimbabwe Safe for Travellers?.

You switch off the engine at the edge of the pan. One elephant, then ten, then fifty walk out of the bush to drink, and there's nobody else around for miles. This is Hwange, all yours.
