Masai Mara Hot Air Balloon Safari: What to Expect
A Masai Mara hot air balloon safari is the one experience guests talk about long after they return home. You lift off in the dark, the sun breaks over the plains and suddenly you are drifting silently above elephants, giraffes and, in migration season, thousands of wildebeest. You land in the grass, and a champagne bush breakfast is waiting. Here's exactly what happens, when to go and how to book it.

What happens on a Masai Mara balloon safari?
Around 5:00 am
Early wake-up and transfer
Your guide collects you from your camp before dawn and drives you to the launch site. Bring a warm layer, because Mara mornings are cool.
Sunrise
Inflation and lift-off
You'll watch the crew fill the balloon with roaring burners, then climb into the basket. Lift-off is so gentle that many guests don't notice they've left the ground.
About one hour
Floating over the Mara
The pilot changes height to follow the wildlife. One moment you're high above the river with a view to the horizon, the next you're low over a herd of buffalo or a pride of lions. The silence between burner blasts is unforgettable.
After landing
Champagne bush breakfast
The ground crew sets up a full breakfast in the open savannah, traditionally toasted with sparkling wine. You then return to camp on a game drive, so the morning becomes a safari too.
What will you see from the balloon?
Expect sweeping views of the plains, the winding Mara River and its hippos, and wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, topi and buffalo. Big cats are often seen too, although nothing is guaranteed. From about July to October, you may fly over the herds of the Great Migration, a sight that shows the true scale of this natural wonder. Best time for a balloon safari in the Masai Mara
- July to October: the migration season. This is the most popular time, so book well ahead.
- December to February: green, beautiful and quieter, with excellent light.
- March to May: the long rains. Flights still run on most mornings, and the plains are lush and empty.
Flights depend on the weather, and the pilot will cancel if it isn't safe. See the best time to visit Kenya for more detail.
Is a hot air balloon safari worth it?
For most travellers, yes. It's a once-in-a-lifetime way to understand the Mara's size and beauty, and it makes a perfect celebration for honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone birthdays. It is a premium extra, so we recommend one flight per trip, ideally on a morning when you don't have a long transfer. Rates change each season, so ask us for current prices when you book.
Practical tips
- Age: operators set a minimum age, usually around 7 years. Check before booking with children.
- Health and mobility: you'll need to climb into a basket and land in a seated, braced position. Tell us about pregnancy, back problems or mobility needs.
- What to wear: warm layers, a hat that won't blow away and closed shoes.
- Camera: a strap is essential. A mid-range zoom is more useful than a very long lens.
- Where you stay matters: launch sites are spread across the Mara, so we match your flight to your camp. Read about the Mara conservancies and the national reserve.
How to book your balloon safari
Balloon places sell out in peak season, so it's best to book together with your safari. Tourgy Tourz arranges the flight, transfers and timing around your itinerary. Explore our Kenya safaris or plan a romantic version with our Kenya honeymoon safari guide.
The burner falls silent, the sun spills gold across the grass and below you the Mara wakes up. Some places stay with you long after you return home. This is one of them.
