The best places for a safari in Kenya

Kenya's most famous reserve

Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is Kenya's star attraction, with rolling grasslands, one of Africa's highest densities of big cats and, from about July to October, the Great Migration. Bordering the national reserve are private conservancies, where fewer vehicles, off-road driving, night drives and guided walks make for a more exclusive experience. Elephants and Kilimanjaro

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds and, on clear days, iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising across the border in Tanzania. Swamps fed by underground springs attract wildlife year-round, making it excellent for photographers.

Rare northern species

Samburu National Reserve

In Kenya's dry north, Samburu is home to the "Samburu Special Five": Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. It is wild, scenic and far less busy than the Mara, with the Ewaso Ng'iro River drawing elephants and big cats.

Rhinos and birdlife

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru is a rhino sanctuary, one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhinos, along with lions, buffalo and Rothschild's giraffe. Flamingo numbers vary with water levels, but the lake is always rich in birdlife. It is an easy stop between Nairobi and the Mara.

Conservation and rhinos

Laikipia and Ol Pejeta

The Laikipia Plateau, north of Nairobi, is a patchwork of private ranches and conservancies known for conservation success, walking safaris and wild dogs. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the last two northern white rhinos and a large black rhino population.

How many days do you need?

5–6 days: the Masai Mara, perhaps with a night in Nairobi.
7–8 days: Amboseli and the Masai Mara, the classic Kenya combination.
10–12 days: Samburu or Laikipia, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara, or a safari plus the beach.

Road safari or fly-in safari?

A road safari in a pop-up-roof safari vehicle is the most affordable way to see Kenya and lets you take in the scenery between parks. A fly-in safari uses light aircraft between airstrips, saving long drives and leaving more time for wildlife. Many travellers mix both.

When is the best time for a Kenya safari?

The dry season, from June to October, offers the best game viewing, with the Great Migration usually in the Masai Mara from about July to October. January and February are also excellent. The long rains, from about March to May, bring lush scenery and lower prices. See our full guide to the best time to visit Kenya.

How much does a Kenya safari cost?

Costs depend on your style, travel season, the parks you visit and whether you drive or fly. Lodges in the national reserves and private conservancies range from comfortable mid-range camps to exclusive luxury, and peak season (July to October) is the most in demand. Park and conservancy fees are an important part of the cost. For a tailored quote, contact our team.

Add a beach finish

End your safari on the Indian Ocean. Kenya's own coast, including Diani Beach, is a short flight from Nairobi, and Zanzibar is easy to add too. See our guide to where to stay in Zanzibar.

Practical tips

Watching the sun rise over the Mara, with lions stirring in the grass and balloons drifting overhead, you understand why Kenya is where the word "safari" was born.
