Kenya vs Tanzania Safari: Which Is Better for You?
Kenya vs Tanzania is one of the most common safari questions, and the honest answer is that both are outstanding. Choose Kenya for easy access, private conservancies and the Great Migration from about July to October. Choose Tanzania for vast wilderness, the Ngorongoro Crater, migration viewing for most of the year and an easy Zanzibar add-on. Or combine both.
Quick verdict
- Shorter trips and easy logistics: Kenya
- Exclusive conservancies, walks and night drives: Kenya
- Migration from July to October: both, with Kenya's Mara a highlight
- Migration from December to June: Tanzania
- Vast wilderness and the Ngorongoro Crater: Tanzania
- Safari plus Zanzibar: Tanzania (though Kenya connects easily too)
Masai Mara vs Serengeti
The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are actually part of the same ecosystem, divided by the border. The Serengeti is far larger, giving a sense of endless space. The Mara is smaller and more compact, with a very high density of wildlife and big cats, and its neighbouring private conservancies offer a more exclusive experience with fewer vehicles.
The Great Migration: which country, which month?
| Months | Where the herds usually are | Best country |
|---|---|---|
| December–March | Southern Serengeti, calving season | Tanzania |
| April–May | Central Serengeti (long rains) | Tanzania |
| June–July | Western and northern Serengeti | Tanzania |
| July–October | Northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara | Both (Mara River crossings) |
| November | Moving south through the Serengeti | Tanzania |
Timing varies each year with the rains. Read our Masai Mara migration guide and the Serengeti migration guide.
Beyond the migration
Kenya offers Amboseli's elephants with Kilimanjaro views, Samburu's rare northern species and rhinos at Lake Nakuru and Laikipia. See our Kenya Safari Guide.
Tanzania offers the Ngorongoro Crater, a wildlife-filled volcanic caldera, plus Tarangire's elephants and baobabs, and the remote southern parks for adventurous travellers.
Crowds and exclusivity
Both countries' most famous areas can be busy in peak season. In Kenya, private conservancies bordering the Mara limit vehicle numbers and allow walks and night drives. In Tanzania, the Serengeti's size helps spread vehicles out, and remote areas and southern parks feel very wild.
Logistics and trip length
Kenya: Nairobi is a major hub, and the Mara is a short flight away, so Kenya works well for shorter trips of five to seven days.
Tanzania: the northern circuit starts from Arusha or Kilimanjaro, and distances are greater, so eight to ten days is ideal.
Cost
Both countries offer options from comfortable mid-range camps to exclusive luxury, and park and conservancy fees are a significant part of the cost in both. The best value depends on your season, style and the areas you choose. Ask us for a tailored quote.
