How Many Days in Zanzibar? 3, 5, 7 & 10-Day Plans
How many days in Zanzibar is enough? For most travellers, seven days is the sweet spot: enough for Stone Town, a few unforgettable activities and plenty of time on the beach. Five days is perfect as a beach finish after a safari, and three days gives you a short taste of the island. Here's how to plan each one.
Quick answer
- 3 days: a short break or quick taste
- 5 days: ideal after a safari
- 7 days: the best all-round choice
- 10 days: slow travel and two beach areas
The golden rule
Spend one to two nights in Stone Town for culture and food, then the rest of your time on the coast. Stone Town is not a beach destination, so it works best as a short stop at the beginning or end of your trip. Our guide to where to stay in Zanzibar will help you choose your beach.
3 days in Zanzibar: a quick escape
- Day 1: Stone Town walking tour, sunset on the waterfront, Forodhani night market
- Day 2: Transfer to Nungwi or Kendwa, beach time and a sunset dhow cruise
- Day 3: A final morning swim, then depart
Three days gives you a real flavour of the island, but it will feel quick. If you can, add another two nights.
5 days in Zanzibar: the perfect post-safari finish
- Day 1: Arrive and explore Stone Town
- Day 2: Morning spice tour, then transfer to the north coast
- Day 3: Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll
- Day 4: Beach day and a sunset dhow cruise
- Day 5: Relax, then depart
Five days is our most popular length after a Serengeti safari. See our Serengeti and Zanzibar itinerary.
7 days in Zanzibar: the sweet spot
- Days 1–2: Stone Town, a Prison Island boat trip and the Nakupenda sandbank
- Day 3: Spice tour, then transfer to the north coast
- Day 4: Mnemba snorkelling and a sunset dhow cruise
- Day 5: Jozani Forest and dinner at The Rock
- Day 6: A free day on the beach
- Day 7: Depart
This is the balance most travellers love. Honeymooners should read our 7-day romantic Zanzibar itinerary.
10 days in Zanzibar: slow island living
- Days 1–2: Stone Town and nearby islands
- Days 3–6: North coast: Nungwi or Kendwa, snorkelling, dhows and sunsets
- Days 7–9: East coast or Michamvi: quiet beaches, Jozani Forest and The Rock
- Day 10: Depart
Ten days lets you experience two very different coasts at a gentle pace.
Zanzibar rewards those who slow down. The longer you stay, the more the island feels like yours.
Tips for planning your Zanzibar days
- Don't move hotels too often. Two bases is plenty for most trips.
- Check the tides if you're staying on the east coast.
- Leave a free day. Some of the best memories happen when nothing is planned.
- Consider the season. See our guide to the best time to visit Zanzibar.
