Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling Guide: Dolphins, Turtles & Reefs
Mnemba Atoll snorkelling is widely considered the best snorkelling in Zanzibar. Just off the island's northeast coast, the protected waters around Mnemba are home to colourful coral, shoals of tropical fish, sea turtles and, often, dolphins. A half-day boat trip is all it takes to explore this underwater world.
Mnemba at a glance
- Where: off Zanzibar's northeast coast, near Matemwe
- Trip length: usually a half-day boat trip
- What you might see: coral, tropical fish, turtles, dolphins
- Best time: calm, dry months for the clearest water
- Suitable for: beginners and confident swimmers
What is Mnemba Atoll?
Mnemba is a small, oval island surrounded by a coral reef and part of a marine conservation area. The island itself is private, home to an exclusive lodge, so visitors cannot land on it. But the waters around the atoll are open to snorkelling and diving trips, and that is where the magic happens.
What will you see?
Coral gardens and tropical fish
The shallow reefs are full of life, with brightly coloured parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, trumpetfish and, if you look closely, octopus and moray eels tucked into the coral.
Sea turtles
Green turtles are regularly seen grazing around the atoll. Swimming quietly alongside one is a highlight of any Zanzibar holiday.
Dolphins
Dolphins are often spotted in the waters around Mnemba, sometimes riding the bow wave of your boat. Remember, they are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed.
How a Mnemba snorkelling trip works
- Pick-up: trips usually depart from beaches on the north or northeast coast, such as Matemwe or Nungwi, with hotel transfers available.
- Boat ride: a short trip out to the atoll, often with dolphin spotting along the way.
- Snorkelling: one or two stops at different reef sites, with a guide in the water.
- Refreshments: many trips include fresh fruit, drinks and sometimes a seafood lunch.
- Return: back on the beach in time for a lazy afternoon.
Good to know: a marine conservation fee applies when visiting the protected area. It is often included in organised trips, but check when booking.
Responsible snorkelling and dolphin watching
Mnemba's beauty depends on protecting it. Choose operators who respect the marine environment, and follow these simple rules:
- Never touch or stand on coral. It is a living animal and easily damaged.
- Keep your distance from turtles and dolphins, and never chase or try to touch them.
- Choose operators who don't crowd or chase dolphins. Responsible boats observe calmly and let the dolphins approach.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a rash vest to reduce sunscreen use.
- Take nothing but photos, including shells and coral.
Floating side by side above the reef, a turtle drifting beneath you, the world goes quiet. It's one of those moments you'll both remember long after you return home.
Best time for Mnemba snorkelling
Snorkelling is possible for much of the year, but the calmest seas and clearest water usually come in the drier months. Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons. See our guide to the best time to visit Zanzibar.
