Mana Pools Canoe Safari: Paddling the Zambezi
There's no sound but the dip of your paddle. Ahead, a herd of elephants drinks at the water's edge, and a fish eagle calls from a dead tree. A Mana Pools canoe safari lets you experience the Zambezi at eye level, quietly and slowly, in a way no vehicle can match. Here's everything you need to know.

Easy introduction
Half-day and day paddles
Many Mana Pools camps offer guided canoe outings, gliding downstream for a few hours with a stop on a sandbank for refreshments. It's a perfect taste of the river between game drives and walks.
The full adventure
Multi-day canoe trails
Paddle for several days, typically three to five, through Mana Pools and neighbouring areas. Nights are spent at simple fly camps on islands or riverbanks, with dinner under the stars. Some trails continue through the dramatic Mupata Gorge downstream.
What will you see from the canoe?
- Elephants drinking, bathing and crossing between islands
- Hippos in large pods, which your guide gives plenty of space
- Buffalo, waterbuck and impala grazing on the floodplains
- Lions and leopards occasionally seen on the banks
- Birds: African skimmers, carmine bee-eaters, goliath herons and fish eagles
Is a canoe safari safe?
Canoeing among hippos and crocodiles sounds daunting, but guided trips are carefully managed. Qualified guides know the river intimately. They read the water, keep to shallow channels away from deep hippo pools and give animals space. You'll receive a full safety briefing before setting off. As with any wild adventure, there's some risk, so always follow your guide's instructions. Minimum ages apply, so check if you're travelling with children.
Best time for a canoe safari
Most canoe safaris run from about April to November. The cooler months, June to August, are the most comfortable for paddling. September and October bring the best wildlife on the riverbanks, but it's very hot. During the rains, most trips don't operate. Read our Mana Pools National Park Safari Guide for month-by-month details.
